Once again, SBB Research Group proudly sponsors the Greater Chicago K-12 Chess Championship on February 1, 2020.
CHICAGO, Jan. 27, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Investment management firm SBB Research Group is the presenting sponsor of the Greater Chicago K-12 Chess Championship for the sixth year.
Hundreds of K-12 students will compete for the title of City Champion at the City of Chicago's official chess championship on February 1, 2020. SBB Research Group is proud to be the presenting sponsor in partnership with the Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, the Kasparov Chess Foundation, and the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Academic Chess Program. SBB Research Group began supporting chess tournaments in 2013 at the suggestion of Sandeep Navalgund, the firm's principal engineer, who says he personally benefited from playing chess in school and wants other students to have similar opportunities to develop analytical skills.
The tournament, held in the McCormick Place West Building, is open to all students up to grade 12. Players will participate in the following categories: Primary (K-3), Elementary (K-6), Junior High (K-9) High School (K-12) sections.
The format will consist of championship sections of four Swiss-system rounds at 10:00 AM, 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM, and 4:30 PM, and reserve and novice sections of five Swiss-system rounds at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 3:30 PM, and 5:00 PM, with awards presented at 6:30 PM. There will be Primary Championship, Reserve, and Novice sections for participants in grades K-3; Elementary Championship, Reserve, and Novice sections for participants in categories K-6; Junior High Championship, Reserve, and Novice sections for participants in classes K-9; and High School Championship and Reserve sections for participants in grades K-12.
All players are required to be US Chess Federation (USCF) members. SBB Research Group's sponsorship enables all participating CPS students to receive one-year USCF memberships as well as free tournament entries. Online registration is encouraged, and on-site entry will receive a zero-point bye for the first round.
