See the Future of Building on Saturday, July 1, in Fort Collins, CO
DENVER (PRWEB) June 30, 2023 -- The Passive House Network, with its chapter, Passive House Rocky Mountains, invites you to the Ice Box Challenge kickoff event with the City of Fort Collins at 10 am, July 1, at 222 Laporte Ave. Fort Collins, CO. The Ice Box Challenge is a public installation event and a contest demonstrating the power of Passive House design and construction that starts July 1st and ends July 15 as part of the city’s Building Forward with Our Climate Future celebration.
The Ice Box Challenge consists of two constructed structures, each filled with 2,000 pounds of ice. One is built to the local building code, while the other is to the international Passive House Standard.
“With the Ice Box Challenge, people can viscerally experience the power of better building design & construction,” said local Fort Collins architect Greg Fisher, a Passive House Rocky Mountains leader, and event co-organizer.
Two weeks later, on July 15 at 10 am, a reveal ceremony will determine the amount of ice left in each box and demonstrate how well each ice box kept out the heat. The public can join in by guessing the final weight of ice for both the Passive House and Code Built structures. The best guesses will win prizes!
“The contest gets people to realize, in a fun way, that our buildings can and should do much better,” explains Mariana Pickering, a national Passive House leader, Fort Collins area resident, and Partner at Emu Passive.
When the contest in Fort Collins concludes on July 15, it will occur in Louisville from July 28 to August 11 and finally in Denver from September 9 to the 23rd.
The Ice Box Challenge is being coordinated with The Passive House Network’s annual national conference, happening online on September 28 and in Denver at the McNichols Civic Center Building on October 4-5.

About PHN:
The Passive House Network (PHN), formerly NAPHN, is a 501(c)3 that provides Passive House high-performance building education and resources to professionals across the U.S. that transform how they think and work with buildings. PHN provides professionals with a complete skill set to reliably produce new and renovated buildings that use dramatically less energy for effective and affordable climate action.https://naphnetwork.org/https://passivehousenetwork.org/
About PHI:
The Passive House Institute (PHI) is an independent research institute that has played an especially crucial role in developing the Passive House concept - the only internationally recognized, performance-based energy standard in construction.https://passivehouse.com/https://passivehouse.com/
About Passive House:
Passive House is an international building standard and methodology, applicable to buildings of all kinds, from office buildings to hospitals, new-build, and renovations, that results in a dramatic drop in operational energy use and more comfortable and healthy occupants - meant to mitigate our climate crisis while providing resilient adaptation aggressively.
The Passive House Standard was developed by the Passive House Institute (PHI), an independent scientific research organization located in Darmstadt, Germany, and includes specific requirements for energy use and the comfort of occupants. The Passive House Standard is being successfully applied to thousands of buildings and millions of square feet around the world, from Boston to Beijing.
The Passive House methodology starts with reducing cooling, dehumidification, and heating loads by focusing not on gadgets and active technology but instead on fully integrated durable passive building components, such as proper continuous thermal-bridge-free insulation, continuous airtightness, high-performance windows and doors, and ventilation that includes a high-efficiency heat/energy recovery core, carefully calculated, and all integrated with the entire architectural process of design and construction.http://www.passivehouse.com/http://www.passivehouse.comhttp://www.passipedia.org/http://www.passipedia.org
The International Passive House Association is a membership, communications, and global community-building arm of the Passive House Institute with over 30 affiliated regional Passive House organizations worldwide. https://passivehouse-international.org/https://passivehouse-international.org/
