Shred-It Day: Five JenCare Centers Help Protect Hundreds of Atlanta Seniors From Fraud and Identity Theft
ATLANTA (PRWEB) June 22, 2019 -- Today is a red-letter day for hundreds of Atlanta seniors eager to protect themselves from identity theft, Medicare fraud and scam artists. Five local JenCare Senior Medical Centers are hosting Shred-It Day events at which more than 500 seniors are expected to safely shred up to 10,000 pounds of documents containing personal and sensitive information.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, 35 percent of fraud complaints and 18 percent of identity theft complaints nationwide impact seniors. The FTC also notes a significant number of seniors likely fail to report being victims of fraud or identity theft. Some may fear that reporting such crimes could result in losing independence or the ability to handle their own affairs.
“Georgia ranks 10th in the nation for identity theft, and one of the most common ways scammers attain seniors’ personal information is by dumpster diving,” says Tyrone Cox, Jr., M.H.A., general manager, JenCare Georgia. “We’re encouraging all Medicare-eligible seniors to protect their personal information year-round. An important step is safely disposing of documents they are confident they no longer need on a regular basis, and this means secured shredding.”
Secure shredding equipment and services will be on site at each of the five JenCare medical practices serving Atlanta between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Interested individuals are encouraged to bring up to two bags or boxes of paper to shred. The complimentary secured shredding service is being provided as a community service at the following JenCare locations:
- Brookhaven (3371 Buford Highway, NE; 404-836-0230)
- East Point (2084 Headland Drive; 404-965-5691)
- Morrow (1331 Mount Zion Road; 770-629-3217)
- South DeKalb (2124 Candler Road; 404-836-0272)
- West End (1325 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd. SW; 404-836-0136)
