The 2022 Mountain & Adventure Film Festival Announces In-Person and Virtual Editions for September and October
The Festival moves its in-person events (Sept. 22-25) to Mammoth Lakes, CA, while the virtual (Oct. 7-16) will be presented globally via Film Festival Flix
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 12, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Mountain & Adventure Film Festival (MAFF) is thrilled to announce details of their 2022 in-person and virtual festivities. Returning for its ninth year, the MAFF team is ecstatic to resume live event programming for the first time since its pre-pandemic 2019 edition. Moving from Los Angeles to beautiful Mammoth Lakes, California, the festival brings its multi-day celebration of outdoor adventure film to a location nearly as cinematic as what's featured in the onscreen programming, September 22-25, 2022.
Hot on the heels of the celebration in Mammoth Lakes, the Festival will pivot to present an online, virtual edition via Film Festival Flix's robust streaming platform on October 7-16, 2022. This virtual presentation of MAFF will feature all twenty-five of the films from the in-person lineup, plus an additional fourteen films exclusive to the online fest, allowing viewers from around the globe to experience powerful stories of athletes and enthusiasts challenging themselves and the preconceptions placed upon them.

The Festival's Opening Night feature is Alastair Evans' remarkable documentary A CRACK IN THE MOUNTAIN, exploring both the discovery of Sơn Đoòng, the largest cave in the world, located in in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, and the complicated environmental and economic issues surrounding it.
Eric Bishop's WHY WE WALK is this year's Centerpiece presentation, chronicling the friendship of three Black men living in Cincinnati who establish a city walking practice as a means of intentional self-care. As they begin to achieve comfort within their shared routine, the men, two of which are émigrés from Ethiopia and Senegal, begin to dream of a bigger challenge that will test their bond, present questions of how racial identity in America meshes with preconceptions of who participates in outdoor activities, and inspire a whole community to take up their own daily walking practice.
The 2022 Mountain & Adventure Film Festival's Closing Night Feature is Jan Simanek and Petr Záruba's exceptionally intimate portrait ADAM ONDRA: PUSHING THE LIMIT, chronicling the Czech rock climbing superstar's four-year training sessions in advance of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Coming off of its 2022 world premiere at Visions du Réel, the film interrogates Ondra's craft, his attitude toward his own celebrity, and the struggle to adapt his sizable outdoor and indoor climbing talents to the more speed-oriented technical competition presented by the Olympic challenge.
Of this year's lineup, MAFF Artistic Director Nick Bruno notes that, "At the fore of the programming effort, our Festival Director challenged me to look for films that would reach beyond the built-in audience for outdoor adventure film, capturing the attention of viewers who may not automatically reach for the genre or whose knowledge of it begins and ends with FREE SOLO, TOUCHING THE VOID, or MERU. Having come from a programming background at fests like the Portland International Film Festival and Seattle International Film Festival, I resemble that audience, but I also understand what makes for a great film, and that usually transcends genre. I'm proud to say that I believe we fulfilled Benjamin's directive and I cannot wait for a wide variety of audiences to connect with the fantastic films on offer."

2022 Mountain & Adventure Film Festival highlights
LONGING FOR ÁHKKÁ
In 1921, Arthur Thelin got the chance to fulfil his long-lasting dream and participated in the first documented expedition towards Áhkká and Stortoppen. Exactly 100 years later, in 2021, professional freeskier Magnus Granér decides to repeat the expedition with his filmmaking friends, and follow in his great-grandfather Arthur's tracks. (78 mins.)
ON MY OWN TWO FEET: DESTINATION 3000M
For the first time in their lives, five amputees from 19 to 64 -Jérôme, Sarah, Christophe, Luca and Michel - will climb a 3000m peak in the Alps. Physically prepared or not, they know that their willpower will be stronger than the pain: they are determined to prove that all amputees can walk, run and hike on their own two feet again, thanks to a project of affordable prosthetic blades developed by young engineers. QUIXOTES AND SEEDS (Virtual festival ONLY)
Chef Santi Cordón and permaculturist Alberto Marin take a journey on a vegycle (a bicycle/garden/cooker) built for two from the Spanish city of Tudela to the Malaga Film Festival. Over the course of this 900 kilometres eco trip, a humorous road-movie is born in which the two protagonists plant a vegetable garden on their bicycle, exchanging seeds with the people they meet along the way and highlighting Spanish culinary traditions on the verge of extinction.
