The American Heart Association’s Annual Go Red for Women Luncheon in Ventura County Celebrates Survivors and Supports the Fight Against Heart Disease
VENTURA, Calif. (PRWEB) January 23, 2020 -- The American Heart Association (AHA), the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, announced that their Annual Ventura County Go Red for Women Luncheon will take place Friday, February 21, 2020, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Four Seasons Westlake Village. Approximately 500 residents are anticipated to attend the premier event designed to raise awareness and funds to fight the leading cause of death in women: cardiovascular disease. The event is led by Chair Mike Soules, President of Corwin and Medical Chair Dr. Janki Shah, Associate Professor of Northwest Women’s Heart Health Program at UCLA Cardiology. The 2020 Ventura County Go Red for Women Luncheon is sponsored nationally by CVS Health and locally sponsored by Adventist Health Simi Valley, Amgen, Corwin, UCLA Health, Rusnak BMW, Dignity Health, Manchester Financial, Gholam R. Mohammadzadeh M.D. Inc., Oakmont Senior Living, Los Robles Regional Medical Center, Copperpoint Insurance Companies, and Zebra.
“As Chair of this year’s event, my goal is to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke in our community. By supporting research and education we can improve more lives and give families more precious time together. We are looking forward to sharing inspiring stories of survival and empowering women and their families to take charge of their heart health,” said Mike Soules, 2020 Go Red for Women Chair and President of Corwin.
While nearly 80 percent of cardiac events may be prevented, cardiovascular diseases continue to be a woman’s greatest health threat. Risk factors that are within women’s control include smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity/overweight, and diabetes.
“Heart disease claims the lives of one in three women, killing one woman about every 80 seconds. To treat, beat and prevent cardiovascular diseases, women should understand their family health history, know their numbers and make lifestyle changes like moving more, eating smart and managing their blood pressure,” said Dr. Janki Shah, 2020 Go Red for Women Medical Chair and Director of the Northwest Women’s Heart Health Program at the UCLA Division of Cardiology.
The luncheon will celebrate survivors of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Local resident and heart disease survivor Lisa Elbaum will share her experience and how she discovered she needed open-heart surgery. A panel of local health experts will discuss innovation in fighting cardiovascular diseases and ways to people can reduce their risk. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Janki Shah, Assistant Professor and Director of Northwest Women’s Heart Health Program. Panelists include Dr. Adam Darby, Diplomate of the American Board of Neurology & Psychiatry, Dr. Holly R. MiddleKauff, a member of the UCLA Department of Cardiology, Professor of Physiology, and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and Dr. Alexis Peraino specializes in Internal Medicine at California Health & Longevity Institute. The luncheon will also feature a live auction and health and wellness expo.
