The College of St. Mary uses Custom App from MobileUp Software to Encourage Student Engagement and Build Sense of Community on Campus
App proves to be more effective than other methods of informing students about activities on campus
OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Feb. 15, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The College of Saint Mary (CSM) is using a custom app built on MobileUp Software's mobile delivery platform to increase student engagement, efficiently share information about campus events, and build better connections with the portion of its student population that commutes to its Omaha, NE, campus.
CSM's app is part of a larger trend nationwide as many organizations are turning to apps for increased communication and engagement because the people who have an interest in them use smartphones as their primary method of communication.
"We moved to an engagement app not only to get news about events and college resources in the hands of students (literally) through their phone but also to extend that sense of community to commuter students, even those that only have one or two classes a semester," said Kris Czerwiec, Director of Student Leadership at CSM.
The app encourages student engagement by encouraging them to submit photos and updates about their activities on and off campus, often incentivized by a contest and publicized through the app's push notifications function.
"As faculty and staff, the app allows us to learn about things that are going on all over campus that we usually wouldn't know about," Czerwiec said.
The app also features event calendars, discussion boards, and the ability to highlight promotions for the latest campus activities on the app's highly visible home screen.
Czerwiec credits the app for saving time over other approaches when trying to reach and educate CSM's 1,100 students about campus activities.
"Prior to this app, my office had become very creative when promoting events and programs," he said. "A lot of energy was spent chasing students around to remind them and make sure things were at the forefront of their minds, which is difficult because they are all very busy thinking about their classes and projects."
