The Rocky Mountain ADA Center Expands Free Online Training Program
Classes created to increase implementation and understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., Feb. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Rocky Mountain ADA Center (RMADAC), a member of the National Network of ADA Centers, is pleased to announce the expansion of its free online training courses which offer people across the Rocky Mountain region and the United States customized training options to increase understanding and implementation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
"Over the past year our team has made an incredible effort to update and expand our online course program to ensure they are accessible for everyone, are complete with current information about this critical federal law and are able to be completed in about one hour," said Dana Barton, Director of RMADAC. "We are proud to make these classes free and each one can help many populations better understand and implement the ADA such as HR professionals, business owners, government officials and people of all abilities. We've experienced an incredible amount of participation and are finding participants come to us for a specific course and then are signing up and completing additional classes as the process we have designed is very engaging and the technology is easy to use. I am personally excited to watch this program grow rapidly as we move through the new year."
Classes were created as self-pacing tools, so e-learners can work at their own tempo in order to complete the classes in a timeframe that suits them best. Each course also comes with easy access to a RMADAC team member, through direct message, in case there are any questions during the learning process. Upon finishing the coursework each participant receives a certification of completion from the RMADAC. Current free online classes include:
- Service Animals and the ADA: This course defines service animals and the rights and responsibilities of service animal handlers under the ADA, as well as the differences between service animals, emotional support animals, and therapy animals.
- Title I Overview: This course covers employer responsibilities and provides guidance for reasonable accommodations, effective communication, essential job functions, and service animals.
- Title II Overview: The purpose and spirit of Title II, along with detailed information for compliance on Title II entities, will be discussed in this course. Clarification of terms such as 'undue burden', 'direct threat', and 'significant risk'.
- Title III Overview: The purpose and spirit of Title III, along with detailed information of compliance on Title III entities, will be discussed in this course. Clarification of such terms as 'reasonable accommodations', and 'undue burden' are discussed, along with a focus on reasonable modifications for policies and procedures.
- Disability Awareness and Etiquette: A two-part course focused on disability awareness and etiquette designed to help everyone understand the magnitude of the disability community, provide a better understanding of proper language to use when addressing people with disabilities, and address etiquette considerations.
- Accessible Voting: This course provides an overview of many of the laws covering accessible voting, common barriers to voting, and physical requirements for accessible voting places.
In addition to the current courses available, RMADAC will launch the first ever online class covering 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design which is slated to launch in the summer of 2019. "We have many ideas for new classes and encourage the public to reach out to us to suggest new courses and places where we can improve upon our current class offerings," said Mike Shea, Lead Instructional Designer for the RMADAC.
