The Sixth Annual Level Ground Festival, An Immersive Multimedia Art Celebration, Kicks Off October 5 With The Launch of SKEW Magazine
The Level Ground Festival provokes conversation and cultural exchange across Los Angeles; this year's artists explore art that takes place 'between spaces' (including the culture created between technology and community) at local galleries throughout October.
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 16, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Level Ground, an award-winning arts cooperative, kicks off its 6th annual Level Ground Festival, Los Angeles' most diverse multi-genre festival, with the launch of SKEW Magazine on October 5. Published in conjunction with the festival, SKEW explores the fascinating, surprising, sometimes overwhelming, and always enlightening connections between pop culture and personal identity.
Curated to provoke conversation and inspire cultural change, The 6th Annual Level Ground Festival is four weekends of gallery shows, live performances, and panel discussions across Los Angeles this October. The festival features three provocative artists whose art takes place 'between spaces' exploring the primordial links between Mexican, Spanish and Angeleno ancestors, the socialization of Afghan American girls, and the culture created between technology and community.
"Since 2014, Level Ground has hosted six annual festivals in Los Angeles and seven roadshow festivals in cities across the country," said Executive Director, Samantha Curley. "We've collaborated with over 200 artists, welcomed over 5,000 diverse audience members and moderated discussions with acclaimed artists in every medium. We are thrilled to introduce our fearless artists at our 6th annual festival, and to celebrate the release of our magazine which spotlights over 30 diverse voices and the community that Level Ground is all about."
The Sixth Annual Level Ground Festival Schedule: Saturday, October 5: SKEW release party in Echo Park, Friday, October 11: Más Caras, a multimedia visual art installation by Evelyn Quijas Godínez at Nous Tous Gallery; Monday, October 14: Indigenous Peoples' Day Program at Nous Tous Gallery; Friday, October 18: soft relations, an interactive software installation by Tristan Espinoza at Forge in Lincoln Heights; Saturday, October 26: Khat-e Penhan / Hidden Line, a surrealist film and multimedia installation by Gazelle Samizay at Art Share in the Arts District. The exhibits include food and drink that fit the cultural themes, along with panels, innovative interactive elements, and live performances. Exploring art that takes place 'between spaces'–the physical interactions that define and negotiate relationships–and the culture created between technology and community challenges us to expand our understanding of one another and our supposed spaces in the world. Each artist confronts this transformative interaction with a sense of fearlessness that takes audiences to a new understanding. Evelyn Quijas Godínez' art installation Más Caras, creates a space for brown, immigrant and otherwise outsider bodies and stories to be seen and heard in predominantly white, male spaces. At his opening, Tristan Espinoza uses a camera to analyze people's silhouettes as they move across a physical space; soft relations, a piece of custom software explores how relation is reconfigured by technology, and how this informs the way we build notions of togetherness. Born in Afghanistan, Gazelle Samizay's surrealist film and multimedia installation, Khat-e Penhan / Hidden Line examines how the repression of events passes between generations as unspoken trauma.
