The Special Event Company Helps Duke Cancer Institute Launch a New Teen Cancer Program
New Unit Will Enrich Duke's Teen and Young Adult Oncology Program
RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 4, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Special Event Company assisted Duke Cancer Institute and First Citizens Bank, the primary sponsor, in hosting an event for the launch of a new Teen Cancer America (TCA) program on Jan. 16.
TCA, a national non-profit founded in 2012 by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, provides specialized treatment facilities for teenagers with cancer. Sally Berry-Webb, CEO of The Special Event Company, co-founded TCA.
Over the past seven years, The Special Event Company has supported TCA, helping launch similar units at Vanderbilt University, Bon Secours Hospital in South Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Physicians, administrators, business executives and community leaders attended the most recent event in Durham. Furthermore, Nolan Smith, director of basketball operations for Duke University men's basketball team spoke at the event and discussed the importance of supporting teenagers and young adults who face cancer.
"When you visit with the young people being treated at Duke, you want to help. That's why I've been so involved with the work of TCA, which is breaking new ground by focusing on this age group," Smith said.
Smith has served as a TCA ambassador since 2016 and hosts an annual summer Hoop-A-Thon in Durham to raise funds for TCA Information on the 2019 Hoop-A-Thon is available from The Special Event
