Thousands of meals heading from New Orleans to Hurricane Florence survivors
Chef Amy Sins of Langlois will oversee the transport of thousands of meals heading from New Orleans to Hurricane Florence survivors.
The disaster meals were produced this week by New Orleans chefs & restaurants in Second Harvest Community Kitchen.
The packaged meals will depart the Second Harvest facility, 700 Edwards Avenue in Elmwood, Sunday Sept 23 (loading meals onto Second Harvest Truck from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m.) for the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
At approximately 7:30 - 8:00am volunteers will begin loading meals onto planes for Myrtle Beach, SC and New Bern, NC.
The planes depart New Orleans at 8:15-8:30am and should arrive at their destination by 1pm.
NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 22, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- This Sunday morning, Chef Amy Sins of Langlois will oversee the transport of thousands of meals for Hurricane Florence disaster victims. The meals were prepared by the New Orleans restaurant and food service community in the Second Harvest Kitchen. The meals will be loaded onto planes at Lakefront Airport.
The pilots and owners are donating the use of the planes, as well as the cost of fuel for the trip to North Carolina.
One plane headed to New Bern, NC, flown by Pilot Glenn Northcott and generously donated by BP Air LLC, will be loaded with over 2000 pounds of prepared meals. The meals are expected to arrive in New Bern, NC by 12:30pm on Sunday. The ground team led by Buddy Bengel of Bengel Hospitality, Chef Clarke Merrell of Circa 81/Dank Burrito, Chef Jeremy Cannon of Fat Fellas, Chef Gary Burk of Beer Army Burger Company and Chef Smoke Boyd of The Flame Restaurant will handle the distribution in New Port, Morehead City and New Bern, NC.
"We are thankful for the generous plane owners and pilots who stepped forward to get these meals to flood survivors and first responders quickly," said Langlois Chef Amy Sins, who organized this week's disaster response. "One thing I've learned the last few years is that disaster response is about developing a network. When that network really comes together, great things can happen."
All of the food was prepared this week in the Second Harvest Foodbank kitchen. Over twenty chefs from notable New Orleans restaurant gathered to prepare dishes such as Grillades & Grits, Fried Turkey, Chicken & Andouille Gumbo, Butterbeans and Shrimp and Bread Pudding.

Chef Amy Sins is actively coordinating with teams on the ground in New Burn, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC. Meals are scheduled to begin arriving at airports after 1pm on Sunday, September 23, 2018.
