Earth Day, the current popular name we give to the ageless vernal equinox, is marked by global celebrations heralding the return of spring. In Sumerian culture, for instance, what we call Earth Day marked the Goddess Inanna's (later Ishtar) return from the Underworld. The ancient Greek myth of Demeter and her daughter Persephone is an almost identical tale around which celebrations are held every year. The Jewish Passover and the Christian Easter are vernal equinox (or Earth Day) celebrations. In many Arab countries, what we call Mother's Day is celebrated on the vernal equinox. Earth Day, in other words, has been with us for centuries, at least since the beginning of recorded history.
Not surprisingly the United Nations several years ago set aside an international Day of Happiness that falls near the vernal equinox. As dry eye expert Kleyne and Weir point out, one can measure success by happiness, not by money. Inter-generational connectivity, sharing, empathy, spiritual and personal growth are all elements of happiness, and the happiness resides in the water.
