Tutorteddy's Research Has Found That College Students Have Access to Solutions for Most of Their Textbooks, Leading to the Loss of Valuable Learning Opportunities
American college students did not have access to solutions to their textbooks' exercises in the past. Only college professors had the access. But that has changed in recent years, taking away learning opportunities and hurting final grades.

These are textbooks whose solution manuals are freely available on numerous websites, allowing students to look up answers as they wish. Some of the websites offering solutions are managed by companies with good intentions, but having these answers available online is still ultimately harmful to students. Despite the obvious problems with these books, many colleges still use them.
Historically, only college professors had access to these manuals. It was probably an offense for a student to access them or for a professor to disclose a manual's contents to his or her students. This system worked well in the past, with college students working hard to solve the homework problems, albeit sometimes through collaboration. Hard work, thought, and collaboration helped college students grow and sharpen various skills. Not anymore. Today, most college textbooks have all of their solutions openly available online. Having the solutions available in this way does not challenge students' abilities. It takes away the best skill college can provide - learning how to learn.
Our investigation found that there are students who routinely score 100s on their homework while getting Fs on their midterms and finals unless those tests are also take-home exams. Counter-intuitively, this is increasing the college dropout rate and decreasing 4-year college graduation rates.
Tutorteddy has found that progressive, forward-thinking universities are aware of the problems outlined above and have stopped using "compromised" textbooks. Hardworking professors are creating their own exercises so that students can have an opportunity to learn and grow. However, 80% of colleges are still using compromised textbooks and are unwittingly hurting their student body because of it.
