Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with an estimated 1 in 5 Americans developing skin cancer in their lifetimes. The good news is that skin cancers are almost always curable when treated early so early detection is key. Just like an annual checkup with your doctor, an annual skin examination with your dermatologist is critical for catching any skin problems in their earliest stage.
Anyone, regardless of skin color, can get skin cancer. Risk factors include fair skin, blue or green eyes, a history of sunburns, excessive sun exposure, a large number of moles, precancerous lesions, and a family or personal history of skin cancer. Athletes frequently endure prolonged sun exposure putting them at significantly greater risk of skin cancer. Many swimmers, triathletes and endurance athletes get into bad sun protection habits including, not using enough sunscreen, skipping trouble areas, not reapplying frequently enough or forgetting sunscreen altogether.
Dr. Farmer recently joined the North Texas Division of U.S. Dermatology Partners which consists of 19 locations, 36 dermatologists and 16 mid-level providers. Dr. Farmer will treat patients in the Flower Mound and Plano office.
