User1st Celebrates the 29th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act
User1st's CEO Amihai Miron heralds the ADA as a groundbreaking piece of legislation that has driven equality, access and inclusion for millions, issues a call to action for greater web accessibility.
WASHINGTON, July 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- User1st, the provider of the most advanced web and mobile accessibility solutions on the market for testing, remediation, monitoring and compliance, today issued the following statement from its co-founder and CEO, Amihai Miron:
"This week marks the 29th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and we celebrate it as a groundbreaking piece of legislation that is viewed around the world as the gold standard for how to safeguard the rights of people with disabilities. The ADA has truly changed the world as a driver of equality, access and inclusion for millions, and it has transformed our physical environment in many significant ways.
"However, much work remains as the digital divide for people with disabilities endures. That's why it's critical today that our adherence to the ADA continues to extend to web accessibility and set a global example for digital inclusion. As the internet plays an increasingly important role in various aspects of daily life – in making a living, pursuing an education, seeking employment opportunities, shopping online, connecting with friends and family, and more – it is essential that the web – and everything it offers – be accessible to everyone."
One in five Americans lives with a disability, according to the U.S. Census, which makes the community of people with disabilities the largest U.S. minority. People with disabilities are about half as likely to be online, according to the Pew Research Center, and since 2008, the Business Disability Forum has given 70 percent of websites it reviews a "red" – defined as having a "significant potential commercial, PR or legal risk – because of their lack of web accessibility for people with disabilities.
This month, User1st launched its uTester Developer Plugin for Google Chrome, a free automated testing tool for identifying web content that does not comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. Designed for developers and website administrators, it automatically scans webpages and web apps and flags both static and dynamic website content and web applications that are inaccessible to people with disabilities. With each web accessibility issue identified, uTester Developer Plugin provides an explanation of the accessibility guideline that is being violated and a rating about the severity of the issue, and links to guidelines for fixing the issue.
To download the uTester Developer Plugin at the Google Chrome Web Store, go to https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/user1st-utester-chrome-ex/njnkgcndilaglaeeifhpdempclgajhdh. To use the tool, users are required to create a free User1st account.
