YWCA Leads Campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (PRWEB) October 01, 2018 -- The YWCA St. Joseph urges the community to “Think Pink,” as October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The annual international health campaign, recognized every October, raises awareness about a disease that impacts roughly one in every eight women every year. This year, the YWCA will again sponsor events that bring the community together to support this cause.
Jean Brown, YWCA executive director, said they are counting on outstanding community involvement again in this year’s events, which include the 10th Annual Paint the Parkway Walk, Ladies’ Night Out, Celebracion Rosa and a Pink Tea Luncheon.
“Most of us know a person or a family that has been impacted by this disease,” Brown said. “The awareness events we sponsor are meant to bring the community together and have fun, but we’re also laser-focused on proactively fighting this disease with awareness, promotion and access to early detection life-saving screenings, and funds that will go toward cancer research.”
The events are as follows:
Paint the Parkway Pink: Check-in is at 8 a.m. at Hyde Park on Saturday, Oct. 6. The walk begins at 10 a.m. Refreshments will be provided. and there will be raffles at the end of the walk. A third of the proceeds will go to the Social Welfare Board’s Westside Clinic to pay for mammograms for women age 40 to 49.
Ladies’ Night Out: Join us from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18 in the YWCA Terrace Room for a fun night. Breast cancer survivors, friends and family as well as the community are welcome to this free event. However, space is limited to 50 guests, so an RSVP is required. Pink Tea Luncheon: Join us from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24 in the YWCA Terrace Room for a luncheon catered by Olive Garden, featuring soups and salads. The cost is $15, but breast cancer survivors are invited to attend for free.
Celebracion Rosa: Latina women are invited to this special celebration, again in the YWCA Terrace Room, from 7 to 9 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 25. This free event will be hosted by Sofia Giorgi, E+ Bilingual Educator, and Zulima Lugo-Knapp.
