Young Marines National Foundation donates $81,000 to Young Marines
DUMFRIES, Va. (PRWEB) July 03, 2023 -- The Young Marines National Foundation (YMNF) donated $81,000 to the Young Marines, a national youth organization, to support the 2023 National Leadership Academy (NLA), which takes place July 8 – 16, 2023, in San Pedro, California.
Lt. Col Mike Zeliff USMC (Ret.) the executive director of the Young Marines National Foundation presented the check on Tuesday, June 20, to Col William P. Davis USMC (Ret), national executive director and CEO of the Young Marines.
"This is only the first of many monetary contributions that the foundation hopes to present to the Young Marines to enhance opportunities for its youth members," said Michael B. Kessler, chair of the board of directors of the Young Marines National Foundation.
Youth members of the Young Marines from across the country will train together in San Pedro to become better leaders. Classes are designed to promote a high level of student morale, teamwork, and decisive thinking. These Young Marines learn to lead other Young Marines through leadership classes, physical and written tests, and close order drill.
“Our leadership training is a primary strength of the Young Marines,” Bill Davis said. “The more kids who can participate in advanced leadership training, the stronger our program and community impact will be.”
The foundation was formed in 2014 with goals to financially support the mission, values, and programs of the Young Marines. This is accomplished by the solicitation, preservation and distribution of gifts, grants, and matching funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations committed to the development of boys and girls into responsible citizens who enjoy and promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.
This donation was made possible due to supporters such as Fred and Diane Smith, Geico Military, and Russell King who made his initial gift in the name of Marine Corps Lt. Col Harold Schrier.
Schrier has one of the seldom-told great leadership stories of the Marine Corps. He enlisted in the Corps in 1936, served as an embassy guard in Beijing, a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, and in the 2nd Raider Battalion. He also participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal before receiving his promotion to Second Lieutenant in the field. He participated in the flag raising on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima as an officer and later fought at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir.
“On behalf of the entire board of directors, and especially those Young Marines attending the National Leadership Academy this summer, we thank the Young Marines National Foundation for this generous donation,” said William L. Smith, chair of the board of directors of the Young Marines.
