$1 Million Pledge to University of San Francisco Establishes New Scholarships for East Bay Students
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (PRWEB) June 02, 2017 -- The University of San Francisco today announced an anonymous donor’s pledge of $1 million dollars to help 10 African-American and Latino students from the East Bay attend the university. The new scholarship fund will award each student a $25,000 scholarship, every year, for four years, beginning in fall 2017. The donor is a 1967 graduate of the university and a resident of the East Bay, the eastern region of the San Francisco Bay Area that includes the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, Hayward and Concord.
“I am grateful to our East Bay alumnus for reaching out to support USF and helping us build an even more diverse and inclusive campus environment,” said USF president, Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. “This gift enables us to award 10 scholarships, beginning next year, to young people who will have new opportunities to live, learn and thrive as USF students.”
The alumnus who made the gift credits his Jesuit education at USF as influencing his philanthropy. He supports a broad range of causes, including health care and environmental efforts, and stated that he would like this gift to support African-American and Latino students from the East Bay.
“I have had many opportunities,” the donor said. “Now I want to provide opportunities for others.”
