“3D Navigation could lower hip replacement surgical errors” Asons Solicitors Comment
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 25 November 2013 -- According to the BBC, a new study has indicated that computer-guided surgery improves accuracy (1). Consequently, it is hoped that these results will be taken on board, lowering the prevalence of the complications, and surgical errors, associated with the procedure.
The study, conducted by the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, in Clydebank, hoped to prove the superiority of computer navigation software, in relation to hip replacements, when compared to the standard practice of judging the position of the hip by eye (1).
As reported by the BBC, the study of 229 post-operative patient x-rays found that 70% of hip replacement are correctly positioned, when conducted by eye; however, results found the figure to be improved to 90% when surgeons used detailed 3D imaging (1).
These results call into question whether standard hip replacement practice should be amended; taking into account that computer navigation improves surgical accuracy, lowering the risk of complications.
Discussing the research, consultant orthopaedic surgeon Kamal Deep, shed light on the advantages (1)–
"At the moment, standard practice for most procedures relies largely on the surgeon's best judgement and pre-operative x-rays to ensure the replacement joint is in the correct position,"
"However, with computer assisted navigation, we have detailed 3D orientation of the surgical area and instruments which can dramatically improve accuracy, reduce the risk of complications at a later date and improve the quality of a patients care."
Following the study, further research is required, determining whether or not there are significant long-term advantages of this approach to patients (1).
