TORONTO, July 15, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- "The Amazing Zoe" Explains Children Cope When a Loved One is Living With Alzheimer's Disease
Author Valene Campbell pushes the boundaries in children's literature by introducing diverse characters and challenging topics
Today, Valene Campbell, author of "The Amazing Zoe" series, announced that the third book in the saga will be released on July 17th. Like its predecessors, the newest addition will cover challenging but necessary topics of conversation for young readers. "The Amazing Zoe" is crafted to serve as a benchmark for parents and teachers to utilize when educating their children about difficult topics.
The first two novels in the "The Amazing Zoe" series were released in 2020; Book One touched on hygiene, health and safety regarding COVID-19, yet the message is written in such a way, that it can be applied for general health, beyond the pandemic. Book Two addressed stereotypes and biases regarding race, focusing on the discrimination that Black girls receive at young ages.
In Book Three Zoe loves to visit her grandma! But this time, she can't help but feel that something is different. Her grandma has forgotten to bake Zoe's favourite cookies, and sometimes she even forgets Zoe's name! But luckily, Zoe's mom is there to help her learn all about Alzheimer's Disease. The story begins with a forward written by Dr. Sharon Cohen, Neurologist and director of the Toronto Memory Program, one of the largest clinical trial programs for Alzheimer's Disease in Canada. The forward is a beautiful compliment to the story that is thoughtful in its approach and helps young readers cope with their loved ones progressing changes.
Campbell shares, "This story has special meaning to my family and I, considering its close proximity to home. We faced the devastating news that my mother was diagnosed with dementia nearly 5 years ago, however the symptoms have been more apparent over the past year."
Campbell continued, "Once my daughter entered the toddler phase, I observed their relationship began to deepen. I was inspired to write this story as a means of 'time stamping' where they are currently, given the natural course of this disease. According to the Alzheimer Society, I learned over 500,000 Canadians are living with dementia and that over 76,000 are diagnosed each year. These numbers are alarming! I also thought of the children who are affected by Alzheimer's Disease by extension of their loved ones. Children are often left with little explanation or understanding based on the changing behaviours displayed by their loved ones. This is a sweet story that can be appreciated by everyone."
New readers of "The Amazing Zoe" can look forward to enjoying some of the series' features, including:
- A clever protagonist who sets out to solve problems and embarks on a path of self-discovery.
- An emphasis on diversity through the characters and overall topics that is rarely seen, yet much needed in children's literature.
- Various learning opportunities where the protagonist and the reader alike will be educated about everyday issues such as relationships, health and social issues.
The release date is a tribute to Campbell's mother, and coincides with Campbell's mother's birthday on July 17th. For early reviewers, the ebook will be free week of July 11th-17th for those who sign up to be a part of her book launch team. There is no cost to you, Campbell only requests an honest review.
"The Amazing Zoe" can be purchased in Kindle eBook, paperback or hardcopy versions.
