"Alternate Currents" explores how prejudice regarding same-sex partnerships, as well as other bigotry can lead to horrific outcomes. Darcy’s friend, Charlie Scott, mysteriously disappears from the Seattle home he shares with his partner, Don, and their daughter, Penelope. Before Seattle detectives and the FBI can solve Charlie’s kidnapping, Penelope also vanishes. As police frantically look for clues, they implicate a local antigay organization and its leader, a pair of local business owners who are being harassed by antigay demonstrators, a flamboyant stalker who is obsessed with Don, and Penelope’s birth mother. When two suspects are murdered, the authorities worry that a vicious unknown killer has abducted Penelope. In the midst of turmoil surrounding Penelope’s birth status and abduction, true to her nature, Darcy tries to help her friends. When she ventures into the midst of the case by conducting a freelance interview with a local clergyman, she is nearly killed in a vicious attack by an unknown assailant.
