"Americans Will Spend Over 100 Million Hours Waiting at the DMV in 2014"
Chicago, IL (PRWEB) February 20, 2014 -- DMV.com, a guide for Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and driving related issues, has announced its decision to publish results from a recent study on DMV wait times. The results show an average wait time of 34 minutes, with some states faring better than others. If each driver in the US visits the DMV once per year this adds up to over 100 Million hours of wait time. The study also looks at the acceptance in each state for initiatives that may improve wait times. Data was compiled over an 8 month period from a DMV satisfaction survey on DMV.com.
The study aims to clarify a tradeoff many DMV's face: save money by cutting back on office hours and employees, or reduce wait times by staying open and fully staffed. Several states are experimenting with different methods to combat this issue. Cameron's Bill, a proposal that came out this February from Oregon, points to a privatization initiative in Washington that reduced wait times. As some state experiments have shown, saving money and reducing wait times do not have to be mutually exclusive.
Along with a nationwide report, DMV.com is releasing state specific reports analyzing state wait time statistics, and offering suggestions based off experiments elsewhere in the country.
The states with the shortest wait times are Kentucky, Arkansas, Minnesota, Ohio and Indiana. Kentucky boasts the shortest wait time, coming in at an average 10 minutes. On the other side of the equation, Nevada, Louisiana, California, Connecticut and West Virginia have the longest wait times. In West Virginia, the average customer can expect to wait over an hour. To see how the rest of the states match up, DMV.com has published a map that shows DMV wait times across the country. As can be seen on the map, the shortest waits occur in the Midwest, while the longest are on the West Coast.
The DMV wait time study builds on an analysis that was released in November assessing initiatives to privatize some DMV services. The November study revealed that 65% of Americans would consider having 3rd party companies provide DMV services. Results from the recent wait time study show that states with longer wait times are more inclined to privatize DMV services. Of the five states with the shortest wait times, only 40% support privatization. In comparison, 80% of the poorest performing states support the effort. A similar relationship occurs in supporting investment for new DMV services online.
