“Black Broadway On U: Transmedia Project”
Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 17, 2015 -- In honor of Black History Month, Andy Shallal, owner of D.C.’s world-famous Busboys and Poets, will host the One Year Anniversary and Fundraiser for the “Black Broadway on U: Transmedia Project” at the grand opening of the Brookland location’s Pearl Bailey Room. The evening reception includes light fare and a special “Pearl Bailey Pop-Up” performance featuring Helen Hayes Award-winning actress Roz White (Duke Ellington School of the Arts and Howard University Alumni) at Busboys and Poets Pearl Bailey Room (Brookland/Metro Red Line), 625 Monroe St., N.E, Washington, DC, on Monday, February 23, 2015, 6:30 pm - 8:30pm.
The Black Broadway on U Transmedia Project sheds light on the under-told story of African American life within Washington, D.C.’s U Street/Shaw Corridor. Known as “Black Broadway” in the early 1910s through the late 1950‘s, U Street was a prominent cultural, social and intellectual hub for Black Washington.
Proceeds from the evening will support the Black Broadway on U: Transmedia Project, the creation of Executive Producer and third generation Washingtonian, Shellée Haynesworth. Her vision for the cross-platform “digital history book” project includes a three-part documentary series, interactive website with immersive user experiences, short web documentaries, special events/performances, and a mobile app, featuring stories about neighborhood elders, community stakeholders, intellectuals and entertainers of D.C.’s Black Broadway era including Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Pearl Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald, among others.
Ms. Haynesworth said, “I want to connect today’s audiences with the historical and hidden contributions of this African American community’s iconic intellectuals and entertainers in music, culture and society, and show their impact on American history and society today.” The cost for the general public to attend is a tax-deductible $100 online donation to the project at: http://www.blackbroadwayonu.com/.
