“CAO, CDO or Both?” New Market Research Report Published by IIA Examines the Evolving Roles in Data and Analytics Leadership
Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) August 06, 2015 -- The International Institute for Analytics (IIA) recently completed and published market research on the proliferation of CAO and CDO roles in the enterprise. This report, authored by IIA examines the evolving roles in data and analytics leadership and is based on interviews with 20 executives holding the title of CAO or CDO (or equivalent). It serves to provide an objective snapshot of contemporary experience in how the two roles are playing out and how they interact across a variety of enterprises.
“As firms devote more and more resources to their data and analytics programs, IIA has been tracking the evolution of leadership roles that will be required, namely the Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) and the Chief Data Officer (CDO). At a high level, this research underscores that the work of data and analytics must be integrated, and lack of clarity about roles and responsibilities wastes energy and slows time to value,” said Jack Phillips CEO and Co-Founder of IIA.
Part 1 of the report provides IIA’s analysis of the proliferation of these roles and the need for role clarity, as well as recommended options for combining the roles or having them work together effectively. Part 2 summarizes and comments on what IIA’s interviewer’s learned directly from the 20 executives holding the titles.
A key finding from the study is that in order to maintain close collaboration with the business, executives with CDO responsibilities rely on the formal structures of governance councils, business data owners, and data stewards. Those with CAO responsibilities rely more on project-based business-analyst team structures and embedding analysts in business functions. Regardless, the creation of CAO and CDO roles clearly illustrates and signals to the organization the importance of data and analytics.
IIA’s annual CAO Summit takes place on October 27, 2015 and will feature insights from this research. To learn more or inquire about attending, please visit http://www.caosummit.com
