“Catio” Trend Offers Outside Space for Indoor Pets, Says Neil Kelly Company
Portland, OR (PRWEB) July 03, 2014 -- For many people, summer means firing up the BBQ and extending their living space to their backyard. However, humans aren’t the only ones who can safely enjoy the great outdoors, thanks to a recent trend of building outdoor enclosures for cats — also known as a “catio” (or cat patio).
Neil Kelly Company, dedicated to sustainable residential design and remodeling, has built many catios for homeowners, allowing their cats to enjoy safe outdoor time. An additional benefit is the protection of a diminishing songbird population. Cats that live in the wild or indoor pets allowed to roam outdoors kill from 1.4 billion to as many as 3.7 billion birds in the continental U.S. each year, according to a new study by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Audobon Society of Portland has developed a Cats Safe at Home (TM) with the vision of “A healthier urban landscape where all cats are safe at home, resulting in a safer and healthier environment for both cats and wildlife.” They even host an annual “Catio Tour” in association with the Feral Cat Coalition. Bob Sallinger, conservation director for Audubon Portland states, “Catios are a great way to allow your cat to enjoy being outdoors, while at the same time protecting your cat from hazards and the local bird population from cat predation. Catios provide a solution that is good for birds and good for cats.”
Neil Kelly Company handyman Howard Hasbrook says, “Catios can range from small enclosures to elaborate screened-in rooms. It’s a creative compromise that gives the animals more exercise and stimulation without exposing them to the potential dangers they would face if allowed to roam freely.”
