“I Want to Die” Search Reaches Epidemic Proportions, NoBullying Investigates In New Article
London, UK (PRWEB) October 21, 2014 -- A simple look at search engines worldwide shows an escalating number of children, teens and youths and even adults searching for terms like “I want to die” and “I want to kill myself”. NoBullying explores the reasons behind this in an article released today.
Regardless of the potentially dangerous answers they may come across when they perform the search, the volume of these search terms shows that many people are depressed and suicidal and don’t know how to deal with their feelings or where to go for help. Case and point is Robin Williams, a famed actor and comedian who suffered publicly from depression and is believed to have taken his own life.
There are a wide variety of reasons people cite as reasons they contemplate suicide. Some of the most common reasons behind their suicidal tendencies are overwhelming feeling of isolation/loneliness, falling grades or behavior problems, financial struggles or bankruptcy, failing relationships, loss of interest in once-loved activities and numerous fears and anxieties for several reasons.
It is important for parents to understand that it is no joking matter when their teen says “I just want to kill myself,” “I really want to kill myself,” or asking “Why do I want to kill myself?” and “I just want to die” or looks up any of these terms or similar search terms online. Any suicide statement must be taken seriously, no matter whether the person seemed to be joking at the time, or not.
Also, exhibiting behaviors which show that the person wants to die or just wants to give up, giving away possessions, giving up on a social life or hobbies they once loved, clothes, or other belongings, may all be signs that the person is thinking of taking their own life.
Ciaran Connolly, Co Founder of NoBullying, notes that the issues of teen depression and teenage suicidal tendencies need more research and communication and even possibly stricter intervention on the parents’ side for more effective suicide prevention.
There is no one article or one resource that could put parents at ease when it comes to their children’s safety in school and online, and talking things out with children and keeping a close eye for signs of their suicidal tendencies is key. Children need to know it is fine to be depressed but it is more essential for them to learn it is perfectly acceptable to ask for help when they are.
Connolly says, “Children and teens are suffering from suicidal depression and have nowhere else to turn to but the internet; this needs to be changed today before it is too late. Talk to your children about their fears and issues before they start thinking of the wrong ways out of their depression pit.”
He added that parents and teachers should make a point to educate the younger generations about the sad outcome of bullying online and offline. According to Connolly, it is quite imperative to press for more firm laws condemning all acts of bullying and harassment.
