“Illusion and Immersion: Drawings by Rebeca Calderón Pittman,” Latino Artist Opens in the Northern Kentucky University Third Floor Gallery
Highland Heights, Kentucky (PRWEB) August 16, 2013 -- Rebeca Calderón Pittman creates constructed pen and ink drawings by combining rendered layers of reality. The Guatemalan-born artist opens her first solo show in the Greater Cincinnati region, “Illusion and Immersion: Drawings by Rebeca Calderón Pittman,” in the Third Floor Gallery at Northern Kentucky University on August 19 with an Artist Reception on Thursday, September 5, from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The show runs through September 20 in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month (http://www.hispanicheritagemonth.org/). Each of Calderón Pittman’s works in this series consist of four or five drawings from life, which are converted by scanning and reorganizing them into complex constructions of overlaid line and shape and then reassembled under a single frame as a distinct “drawing.” The Third Floor Gallery (http://artscience.nku.edu/departments/art/galleries/hours-directions.html) is located in the Fine Arts Center at Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky, eight miles from downtown Cincinnati. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free. Parking is available in the Welcome Center Garage. Calderón Pittman (http://www.rebecapittman.com/) melds together fragments of interiors and exteriors to form a simultaneous vision of observation, displacement and memory. In her mission and methodology, Calderón Pittman follows in the footsteps of a number of artists of her generation (Donald Bacheler, Jean Michel Basquiat) who seek to centralize drawing as a distinct medium - not auxiliary to painting and able to address issues related to postmodern consciousness in ways that painting cannot.
"Pittman’s vision is an all embracing one that is joyful and poignant at its core," writes Manhattan-based writer, teacher and curator Dominique Nahas. "Her Recombinant Drawings open us up. In seeing them and through them we become more aware of our own epiphenomenal worlds that brings us closer, through recognition, to the wonderment of being alive."
Born in Guatemala City, she grew up there with her parents who were missionaries. She was encouraged in her interest in art and attended private art classes through high school. She then studied for a year in an atelier in Paris, later apprenticed with sculptor Galeotti Torres in Guatemala, and then studied fine art at Anderson University in Indiana. She focused on sculpture and oil painting. After college, Calderón Pittman lived in Guatemala and from 1993-2003 developed her paintings. She moved to Cincinnati in 2004 and is currently finishing her MFA at SCAD in Savannah, Georgia.
Calderón Pittman (http://www.rebecapittman.com/reviews.html) opens a two-person show with Martin Weinstein at the Joyce Goldstein Gallery in Chatham, New York, November 2 – 30, 2013. She has exhibited her work extensively in Guatemala, France, Japan, Chile, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the United States. Her solo exhibitions include The Pendleton Art Gallery, Cincinnati; The Bridge (sponsored by the Cincinnati Art Museum), Mason, OH; and Banco de Guatemala Art Gallery. Her group exhibitions include Pop Revolution Gallery, Mason, OH; Cincinnati Art Museum “Hispanic Christmas”; "Expo1" Tokyo, Japan; and “Mujeres por El Arte,” Washington, D.C.
