“Intelligent Knife Will Prevent Cancer Surgery Clinical Negligence Claims” Asons Solicitors Comment
(PRWEB UK) 29 July 2013 -- An “Intelligent” knife has been developed, in the hopes that its use will decrease the incidence of human errors associated with cancer surgery (1). Consequently, it is believed that the new tool will lower the prevalence of surgical clinical negligence claims.
Invented by Dr Zoltan Takats, of Imperial College London, it is alleged that the knife is able to distinguish malignant cancer tissue from healthy cells, allowing surgeons to operate with complete accuracy (1). As an “electric scalpel” the knife uses electricity to sear through tissue, with the smoke from the burnt tissue analysed to produce a chemical fingerprint of the atoms (2). This fingerprint pinpoints whether or not the tissue is healthy, immediately determining if any cancer found is benign or malignant.
According to The Guardian, the device could allow surgeons to carry out operations that might normally be considered too risky. It also means that surgeons will be able to remove every part of the tumour, negating a need for a second operation to clear any remaining tissue (1).
Speaking on the advantages of the knife, Asons Executive, Suzanne Yates –
“This knife represents a significant advancement in medical technology, and it certainly leaves little room for human error. Where breast cancer is concerned, more than 20% of the cancerous tissue can be left behind; this means that there is a higher chance of the disease recurring, and that patients may have to undergo further surgery.
"As well as being incredibly accurate, the use of knife may also reduce operating times, as surgeons will no longer have to wait for biopsy results to be returned. This can only be a positive step. Shorter more accurate operations can only diminish the opportunity for surgical errors, reducing the incidence of clinical negligence claims.”
If you, or someone you know, have suffered as a result of a surgical error, then you may be able to make a claim. Claiming for surgery compensation may help you to cover medical costs, loss of earnings and any other financial burdens associated with your recovery.
