‘Play in American Life’ Honors Joe L. Frost, Children’s Advocate for Play
SAN ANTONIO (PRWEB) June 01, 2017 -- Mary Ruth Moore and Constance Sabo-Risley honor and build upon the work of Joe L. Frost, one of America’s leading experts on play and playgrounds in “Play in American Life: Essays in Honor of Joe L. Frost” (published by Archway Publishing), a book of essays related to the importance of play for children.
The book – written by academics and policy makers working in play – is a resource for educators, parents and anyone concerned about play for children. Focusing on why parents should worry about children playing less than they did 20 years ago, the essays examine play in America from historical, psychological, economic and other perspectives. Essays also discuss the benefits of letting children play without continuous supervision, the value of play in mental and emotional development and the importance of risk assessment in play. Some of the essays include: “A Place for Play in the Liberal Arts” by Michael J. Bell; “Play Deprivation” by Stuart Brown; and “Caretakers of Wonder” by Vivien Geneser.
“The right of the child to play, and the value of play in mental and emotional development, is a timely topic, given the stress of educational testing and the growing number of children living in poverty,” Moore and Sabo-Risley say. “The volume provides an important look at how we see play in the US and how play can be made possible for American children.”
