“Potentially lethal asbestos could lie hidden in thousands of homes” Asons Solicitors Comment
Bolton, United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 1 August 2013 -- Thomas Fairclough, Marketing Executive at Asons Solicitors, made the following statement:
“Asbestos’ frequent use as a building material means that it is common in the general environment. Living or working near asbestos can give personal exposure to the lethal airbourne fibres.”
John and Ann Stewart planned to move, and spent hours cleaning up broken tiles, after removing the carpet and underlay from their Hethersgill home. The couples were hoping to move properties following the renovation. (1)
Whilst cleaning the property, Mr Stewart, 51, explained that they had received a letter requesting that they remove the carpet and underlay. (1)
“We revealed broken and crumbling tiles underneath,” the self-employed burger van owner said.
“Me and the wife were sweeping all the tiles up ready for the exchange.”
According to the News and Star, to the housing association has recently apologised to the couple, offering to make a £2,000 out-of-court settlement. The couples were wise to decline, asbestos exposure is stating that they had no idea of the negative implications it could have regarding their future health. (1)
Thomas Fairclough, added:
“An Asbestos related illness can lead to a slow, painful death, taking up to 40 years for symptoms to present themselves. It is unjust that something hasn’t been done sooner, safeguarding the health of those living in the properties.”
The City councilor, Willie Whalen, has been campaigning for any asbestos to be removed from former council homes for years.
“Health and Safety says if you don’t touch or disturb asbestos it is perfectly safe.
“But if you’re going to be walking on tiles or working on walls, can you say that is safe and undisturbed? Why are 20 people a week diagnosed with asbestos-related cancer if it is safe? Why are there people dying of it?”
A spokeswoman for Riverside said the Stewarts’ case is with their solicitors, who are “liaising directly” with the couple. (1)
“This could mean approximately 50 per cent of our stock has some asbestos.”
But the spokeswoman was quick to reassure residents, adding: “This does not mean that these materials present a risk. (1)
“Guidance from the Health and Safety Executive states that ‘If materials containing asbestos are in good condition and in a position where they are not going to be disturbed then it is safer to leave them where they are’.”
