‘The Penis Monologues’ Debut Features Revelation of Sexual Abuse by Former NBA Star
New York (PRWEB) July 29, 2013 -- “The Penis Monologues” hit the stage in a big way this month with a major revelation by former NBA star Kenny Anderson of sexual abuse he suffered as a child.
After the debut on July 7, Seth Rosenthal from SBNation.com wrote a story recapping the play and the insights offered by its performers. Then, on July 25, SB Nation’s David Roth wrote a longer profile piece focusing largely on Anderson, his revelation and the play. Roth’s article attracted a great deal of national attention, with Anderson’s story featured in Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, NBC Sports and attracting attention from networks like ESPN, HBO, CNN and many others.
In late October, Anderson—along with fellow performers Chris Gatling, Tate George and Dan Bowman—will next take the “The Penis Monologues” on the road to Miami, where the upcoming series “Basketball Lives” is being filmed. In a video interview with Matt Ufford, another SB Nation contributor, Anderson opened up further about his upbringing and the reason behind his disclosure.
“If [others] could see that Kenny Anderson is talking about it, now they may be able to tell their story,” Anderson said in the interview. “I wasn’t going to do it, but then the trigger went off for me. This had to be done.”
Anderson will share more about his experience in his upcoming book, titled “Instructions Not Included.” The play’s writer and organizer Joe Brown also has a book coming out called “The Penis Monologues,” in which he will delve into many of the issues covered in the play. Both books will be released in March, in time for the NCAA Tournament.
The play, an off-Broadway production featuring several former professional athletes and celebrities, starts a healthy dialogue between the sexes, beginning from an honest male perspective. The production services as a rebuttal to the concepts presented in the highly popular play “The Vagina Monologues™,” with the goal of helping men and women understand each other better and improving relationships and marriages for couples around the world.
“The Penis Monologues” offers an insightful look into the trials and tribulations of celebrity “penises,” featuring topics like why so many celebrities and pro athletes have serious problems with relationships, finances and sometimes the law. In addition to sexual issues, the play focuses on the challenges of bad investments, poor business decisions and dealing with life beyond the spotlight.
“As a close friend of Kenny’s, I’m very proud of him and have so much respect for the courage it took to share this painful part of his past,” said Brown. “His revelation was part of a truly incredible event, where all of the performers on stage shared very interesting—and often deeply personal—insights with the audience. Combined with a degree of humor, this play takes a new approach to communication between the sexes in the 21st century.”
