What’s so special about it?
Cavities must be positively identified before they can be removed and replaced with a dental filling. For decades, dentists have relied on a combination of visual examination and X-ray imaging to detect cavities. The CariVu Cavity Detection Device is different. It uses a patented transillumination technology that enables me to look right through the structure of the tooth and identify cavities with amazing precision.
CariVu slips over a tooth and envelops it with safe light in the near-infrared spectrum. Your tooth enamel reflects the light back to the device’s imaging lens, while decayed areas absorb the light. When combined with regular dental check-ups. CariVu enables us to identify potential issues before they have a chance to progress.
What are the benefits to you, the patient?
The CariVu Cavity Detection Device is an excellent imaging alternative for patients who do not wish to undergo X-ray photography. Though the amount of radiation exposure a patient receives in a typical X-ray is minimal – similar to what one experiences in a cross-country commercial flight; some patients remain cautious. Because CariVu relies upon near-infrared wavelengths of light, there are no X-rays to worry about.

Limitations of the CariVu
- Unable to visualized the tooth structures under crowns and bridges
- Cannot detect any gum issues
- CariVu cannot see the roots of the teeth, therefore cannot detect infection
- Cannot detect caries at the gum line of teeth
The CariVu is an amazing tool that will help our dental office reduce the number of x-rays exposed, but it will not replace the use of x-rays. The reason for this is the CariVu is not capable of shining its light through metals or porcelain. Therefore, the CariVu is not a good match for crowns, bridges or implants. Also, the CariVu is unable to detect for bone loss, or periodontal disease. For these reasons the CariVu is not a good match for every patient and not every tooth. However, the CariVu is the perfect adjunct to digital radiographs.
