A Cyclist's Reflections from the Road
CLEAR SPRING, Md. (PRWEB) February 18, 2016 -- In 2016, few parents would likely urge their teenagers to stay out all night; back in 1977, though, Dennis Whitmore’s father urged him to try his first overnight bicycling trip. Since then, Whitmore has logged thousands of miles and many weeks of long rides.
“I have found in my many journeys, over hundreds of miles at a time, that I was always safe and never alone,” Whitmore said. “God has always been with me, even when I was not looking for Him.”
Though raised and confirmed in the Lutheran church, family issues with the pastor led to Whitmore rejecting church, the Bible, and anything religious and identified as agnostic through his twenties.
“The more I asked what I was supposed to do with my life, the more bicycling became my means of escape to explore the truth,” Whitmore said. "Then, with time, much of my cycling has been all about looking for God.”
After earning a degree in business administration and working for seven years in the fitness field, Whitmore’s high school best friend’s authentic faith in Jesus Christ inspired Whitmore to return to God.
“My friend’s conversion prompted me to question my doubts and my unbelief; to seek God; to know the truth,” Whitmore said.
Now a senior pastor at Hilltop Christian Fellowship in Clear Spring, Md., Whitmore reflects on the lessons God has taught him during forty years of cross-country bicycle riding with his new book Ponderings of a Pedaling Pastor.
