A Day of Service, Project Homeless Connect Works to Help the Homeless in New Jersey
Paterson, New Jersey (PRWEB) January 26, 2015 -- As bitter cold grips the state, Project Homeless Connect is a one day event in which the community comes together to serve those most in need in New Jersey. On Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at 10:30, staff and volunteers representing non-profit and community groups will meet in the main parking lot of Eva’s Village, located 393 Main Street, Paterson, New Jersey to aid the homeless in locating the services they require, including food, clothing, housing information, hygiene products, medical and dental services, mental health services, family services and much more. Project Homeless Connect is one of many such events across the country that provides information and referral services to the homeless.
The Point-In-Time(PIT) Count is conducted to identify the number of homeless individuals and families in the county. It is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to be completed at least every two years. It is also a requirement to qualify for state funds administered by the State Office on Homelessness. Some private foundations rely on the results of this count to determine grant awards.
Project Homeless Connect is designed to help the homeless in NJ access the services available to them and to foster collaboration between non-profit, public, private and individual volunteers in the effort to end homelessness in New Jersey. Marie Reger, Executive Director of Eva’s Village, says, “As the coldest months of winter are upon us, it is important to reach out and help the poor in New Jersey.” “Project Homeless Connect is a valuable program that connects the most unfortunate among us with the help and support they need.”
Eva’s Village is feeding more than 350 people each day in a dining room with capacity for 400. The Community Kitchen has seen a 26.7% increase beginning in July 2008. Founded by Msgr. Vincent E. Puma in 1982 as a response to the poor and homeless in Paterson, NJ, Eva’s Village is a non-profit comprehensive social service organization with a mission to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, treat the addicted and provide free medical and dental care to the poor. Through almost three decades of service, Eva’s Village has established a unique record in facing community challenges and changing the lives of the hungry, homeless and addicted. It has grown from a simple soup kitchen to become the most respected anti-poverty program in New Jersey. Eva’s Village now includes fourteen integrated programs housed in numerous buildings spanning several city blocks in Downtown Paterson.
