A Rare Achievement: Pitt Public Health Biostatistician Named Fellow of Top Statistical Organization
Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) June 10, 2015 -- Abdus Wahed, Ph.D., professor of biostatistics at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health, has been named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA).
The ASA is the world’s largest professional society of statisticians, and less than one-third of 1 percent are elected as fellows each year. This year, only 62 statisticians from around the world have been chosen to receive this honor, based on their commitment to advancing research and using statistics to improve the overall quality of life available for people around the world.
"I am humbled and honored to be selected as an ASA fellow," said Dr. Wahed. "This is an amazing honor for the Department of Biostatistics and the University of Pittsburgh. This recognition will certainly inspire us further."
Dr. Wahed’s work focuses on methodology for dynamic treatment regimes and sequential randomized trials. He also works diligently to promote statistics in developing countries. He conducts workshops in countries like Bangladesh, training statisticians and biostatisticians in modern statistical methods.
“This remarkable achievement is a reflection of Dr. Wahed’s commitment to the betterment of the world through statistics,” said Sally C. Morton, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Biostatistics at Pitt Public Health. “This honor recognizes not only his scientific contributions but also his excellence as at teacher and mentor. We are honored to have him as a colleague.”
Prior to being elected as a fellow, Dr. Wahed received Pitt’s Craig Award for Teaching in 2012, and he was recognized as “Statistician of the Year” by the Pittsburgh chapter of the ASA in 2014.
Dr. Wahed received his undergraduate degree from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and his masters in mathematical statistics from Ball State University. He received his doctorate in statistics from North Carolina State University.
