Abernethy Laurels Retirement Community Announces $3.6 Million Capital Campaign
Newton, North Carolina (PRWEB) March 24, 2015 -- Abernethy Laurels, a continuing care retirement community in Newton, announced a $3.6 million capital campaign today to build a new healthcare center.
The campaign, which is now in the public phase, will fund construction of a new two-story healthcare facility, as well as complete demolition and rebuilding of the existing healthcare center.
“This project is about more than constructing a building. It is a ‘gift of dignity’ to the residents of Abernethy Laurels and to the wider community,” stated Joe Beaman, campaign chair and Chief Administrative Officer of Peoples BanCorp.
Most of the existing healthcare center was built in the early 1970s, making it the oldest long-term care facility in Catawba County. When Abernethy Laurels was built, an institutional, medical model guided the development of long-term care facilities. Today’s approach in providing care is person-centered with an environment that is designed to evoke a feeling of home, also known as the Household Model.
The first phase of the multi-million dollar project will house those needing rehabilitation and memory care services. “It’s important that we prepare to serve the aging baby boomer population, which is expected to increase 68 percent over the next two decades in Catawba and Lincoln counties,” said Amber McIntosh, Executive Director at Abernethy Laurels.
The current healthcare building faces challenges that include: outdated water source heating that makes it difficult to control the temperature, bathroom entrances that do not accommodate modern-sized wheel chairs, and a lack of storage space for both residents and the facility. In addition to these challenges being addressed, the new building will offer more private rooms and more square footage for each resident.
More than half of the seniors served in the healthcare center at Abernethy Laurels have limited financial resources, part of the organizations charitable mission.
After a campaign planning study conducted last fall, the organization’s Board of Directors and leadership team approved a $3.6 million campaign. Since last October, the campaign has raised more than $2.9 million.
The retirement community hopes to exceed their campaign goal by August.
