Academic Administrators Engage In Leadership Development at the Academy for Academic Leadership's CAAMP Program
Atlanta, Georgia (PRWEB) August 28, 2017 -- The Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL) held the 2017 Chairs and Academic Administrators Management Program (CAAMP) on August 10–12 at the Emory Conference Center Hotel in Atlanta. Academic administrators from U.S. and international higher-education institutions attended this interprofessional workshop; in addition to arts and sciences, professional programs including medicine, dentistry, nursing, and pharmacy were represented.
Created in 2009 by AAL, an Atlanta-based international consulting and professional development organization, CAAMP is a hands-on workshop that addresses the unique challenges and opportunities encountered by department chairs and other academic administrators. Since its inception, more than 400 department chairs and academic administrators have benefited from the program.
This year’s participants affirmed the value of CAAMP. “I will use the assessments, coaching, and case studies to practice engaging leadership in my role,” said Andrea Knopp, Nurse Practitioner Program Coordinator at James Madison University School of Nursing. Andie Ward, Chair of the Department of Biology at Adelphi University, added that she learned “tangible strategies for being a strong and effective chair” and said, “I can go home and implement the things I learned immediately.” Hamad al Rumaih, of Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University College of Dentistry in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, said that “this program is worth the trip.”
CAAMP alumni have developed their leadership abilities through assessments, peer feedback, and individualized, professional coaching. In addition to completing a leadership competency assessment, this year’s participants learned about such topics as leading in times of crisis, strategic planning, and understanding legal issues in an academic environment.
“CAAMP is designed as an interactive experience with immediately applicable strategies and action steps to help participants succeed in the changing educational environment,” said Dr. Karl Haden, AAL President. “CAAMP brings chairs and academic administrators together from a variety of disciplines, fields, and institutions. This participant diversity, along with active learning, is one of the keys to the program’s continued growth and success. Our faculty also mirror this academic diversity, bringing rich experiences and different perspectives to the sessions.”
