Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) Completes Review of Four Michigan Hospitals Seeking Accreditation for Elective PCI
Washington, DC (PRWEB) February 23, 2016 -- Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) has completed a review of applications from four Michigan hospitals seeking accreditation for elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI): Holland Hospital in Holland, Huron Valley Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia, and Mercy Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Rapids. The application process is the first step in fulfilling state requirements for facilities offering elective PCI without onsite open-heart surgery. ACE has already approved the applications from Holland and Huron Valley Sinai Hospitals, and expects to accredit the other two hospitals shortly.
In September 2015, ACE was named by the State of Michigan to provide accreditation for specific types of cardiac catheterization services in the state. The approval followed a determination by the Michigan Department of Community Health Certificate of Need (CON) Review Standards that certain facilities providing elective PCI services, which seek a waiver from state regulations requiring onsite availability of open-heart surgery, “shall have Accreditation for Cardiovascular Excellence (ACE) accreditation or an equivalent body perform an on-site review within 3, 6, and 12 months after implementation.”
“ACE accreditation is an important distinction for community hospitals performing elective PCI without onsite backup surgery, as it demonstrates compliance with state regulations and national standards for documentation and quality criteria,” commented Charles E. Chambers, MD, MSCAI, past president for the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, Professor of Medicine and Radiology and Board Chair of ACE. “We are pleased to see these four facilities taking the first step in their accreditation journey, as it will ultimately benefit their respective communities.”
The Michigan legislation is similar to the selection of ACE by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 2014. The Commonwealth directed Pennsylvania facilities that perform elective PCI procedures without onsite surgery to gain accreditation meeting ACE standards as a means to secure a waiver from state requirements for onsite surgical services.
