Accudraft Titan Paint Booth Makes a Dream a Reality for 2015 Fender Bender Award Recipients.

Edison Career and Technical Education School principal Moses Ojeda and collision refinishing program instructor Barry Roopnarine were named one of six Fender Bender Award recipients for 2015. The pair credits the addition of the Accudraft Titan paint booth with their success.
The once third-rate one year high school collision repair program was not good enough and both the principal and the instructor knew it. The problem they faced was getting approval to purchase the equipment necessary to give their students the real world experience and tools necessary to compete in the industry.
Top on their list of priorities was securing funding for a top-of-the-line Accudraft Titan paint booth. After years of fighting to gain approval for the additional funding the green light was finally given and the team went to work revamping their entire program.
Over the last few years, Ojeda and Roopnarine worked tirelessly to turn the one year program into a three year program that offers graduates the best chance to make a career out of their high school education. Today Thomas Edison High School is considered one of the premier technical institutes in the country.
Evidenced by their glowing success and being named the Wild Card Fender Bender Award winners this year, having a first class paint booth on-site is what has made the difference. Being able to add their Accudraft Titan to their operation was “a dream becoming a reality,” said Barry Roopnarine.
Nominees for the annual Fender Bender awards are chosen by industry professionals and then selected by the staff at Fender Bender. Their goal: To reward the “industry’s finest” who exhibit their principles of talent, determination, goodwill, and passion.
In addition to the recent Fender Bender Award (the first awarded to joint recipients) the high school repair program was also awarded a $50K grant by the Collision Repair Education Foundation. They were also first place winners of the SkillsUSA National Refinishing Competition and two-time second place finishers in the State of New York.
Both Ojeda and Roopnarine’s passion for helping their students to cultivate successful careers continues to drive their success. “The goal is to make sure these kids are employed after high school,” says Moses Ojeda, adding, “It’s about taking it to the next level and being on the cutting edge.”
Instructor Barry Roopnarine shares Ojeda’s passion for showing his students that they can succeed in life. He credits their enormous success with motivating his students to aim high saying, “It’s about inspiring these kids to do more with their lives.”
It is that kind of goodwill that has helped them to reach their goals but they are not stopping there. The dynamic duo has plans to continue to improve on their success. They look to include waterborne paint instruction, to expand their detailing coursework, and to include tinting and stripping to the curriculum.
