Compared to the previous generation, the new Intel Xeon processor E5-2600v2 has better performance, energy efficiency and security.

The versatile new processor for compute-intensive applications is designed to function as the core of an efficient data center. It’s up to 40 percent more energy efficient than a previous generation Intel Xeon processor-based server and up to 250 percent more energy efficient than the average 4-year-old server. The processor can seamlessly replace existing Intel Xeon E5-2600 (Sandy Bridge-EP) CPUs.
Major improvements include a higher core count, with up to 12 cores/24 threads, and up to a 30 MB third-level cache. The new architecture offers higher clock speed, with up to 3.5 GHz, as well as support for higher memory speed (up to 1866 MHz).
The Intel Zeon E5-2600v2 family has four memory channels and an integrated PCIe controller. Most versions support Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, which speeds processor performance for peak loads. The processor also features Intel’s Hyper-Threading Technology, which provides faster performance by offering thread-level parallelism that benefits multi-threaded and concurrently running applications.
The new processor also includes a new advanced programmable interrupt controller virtualization (APICv) feature that improves virtualization performance and reduces virtualization overhead for I/O bound workloads.
New data protection technology enhances security via Intel’s Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) and Intel Secure Key. Both of these features streamline encryption by reducing performance penalties. Other Intel Platform Protection Technology enhancements improve security by bolstering malware protection, increasing overall security and reducing platform surface attacks.
