Ace Computers: Recent Headlines Make the Security Case for Custom Computers
Chicago, Ill. (PRWEB) August 20, 2013 -- One of the biggest and least understood benefits of custom computers manufactured in the U.S. is that the chance they contain covert malicious software (malware) is comparatively low.
This is an issue that came to the forefront recently with the revelation that a computer manufacturer in China that makes products for a top computer company was involved in the deliberate malware sabotage of some computers destined for specific government agencies in the U.S and other countries. This points to a supply chain security vulnerability that is present in all technology manufactured in China (which includes technology products from nearly all major players).
The challenge with attacks that occur within the supply chain is that sophisticated designers can make malware virtually impossible to detect. While it’s always possible that technology destined for consumers is randomly embedded with malware, this latest incident indicates that technology destined for government agencies is being deliberately targeted.
Even components as innocuous as flash memory and RFID chips can host malware. In fact, the issue is so worrying that the U.S. State Department agreed to keep personal computers made by one Chinese manufacturer off networks that handle classified government information.
Logic would dictate that even U.S.custom computer manufacturers are vulnerable to embedded malware since they are also using components that are manufactured in China But this is not so, since it appears that strategic computers were selectively infected.
Ace Computers CEO John Samborski said, “I can’t comment on the situation with computers manufactured in China, but it stands to reason that a company such as Ace Computers, that builds custom technology only in the U.S., not in China, would be a much safer bet for U.S. government entities.”
Samborski added, “Our major clients are government agencies that started buying from us many years ago for other reasons. But I have no doubt that the issue of embedded malware is a significant incentive to opt for custom.”
