Acker Merrall NYC Goes from Strength to Strength, US$3.5m 95% Sold, Another 111 World Records Fall, "A Tale of Two Cellars" to be Auctioned May 3rd in NYC
NEW YORK, N.Y. (PRWEB) April 09, 2014 -- The New York market continued to roar this past weekend as it continued its valiant effort to reclaim the throne as the world’s most important wine market. “I’m officially impressed,” commented Acker Merrall & Condit Companies CEO John Kapon. “New York has been absolutely sizzling so far this year, going from strength to strength. The breadth and depth of a New York auction are second to none, and the market appreciates that more than ever. It is exciting to have a sale like that in New York again, and the market is thirsty for it.”
The April 5th auction started off with a bang, thanks to the largest collection of Sine Qua Non ever auctioned by Acker. Most lots from this collection hammered far above pre-auction high estimates, including a three bottle lot of the very rare first ever SQN release, the 1994 Queen of Spades, that sold for $8027 versus a high estimate of $3500, as well as magnums of the 2001 On Your Toes trading for $3,396 each.
What followed throughout the day were world records falling for the greatest wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, the Rhone, Italy, Spain and California, but Burgundy dominated, with 84 of the 111 New World Records set by the belle of the ball. DRC, Ramonet, Henri Jayer, Leflaive and Ponsot made sure Burgundy also dominated the Top 25 lot results, taking 15 of the Top 25, led by the auction’s top lot, a three bottle OWC of 2010 Romanee-Conti that sold for $37,050. Bordeaux grabbed the other ten of the Top 25 lots, including OWCs of 1989 Haut Brion, the stellar 2000s from Lafite, Latour, Mouton, Margaux and Cheval Blanc plus 1996 Lafite and 1975 Lafleur.
Of the new World Records, Fourrier led the way with eleven, yet the diversity of demand and world records from Burgundy was as diverse as the region itself. Other notables included 2008 and 2010 Rousseau; 1966, 1969 and 1976 DRC; two vineyards of 1989 Henri Jayer magnums; six Dujac vintages, five for Roumier and five new World Records from Leflaive. Just as importantly, there were 22 overall World Records for white Burgundies, which is a sign that it isn’t always a red, red world. Other notable producers setting world records outside of the Burgundy world included Ausone, Bollinger, Bruno Giacosa, Egon Muller, Lafite Rothschild, Marcassin, Pegau and Vega Sicilia.
