Add Living Decorations to this Year’s Holiday Theme

For a stunning mantle, hearth or centerpiece, set the bulb in stones with a little water in a clear vase. Accent with branches, dried cranberries and burlap ribbon.
Set a potted amaryllis in decorative containers such as vintage wooden wine crates or birch-wrapped pots. Place them at entryways or at gathering places to welcome holiday guests. Fill the top of the pot with greenery like moss, pine or holly to conceal the soil and add extra texture to a potted amaryllis.
Don’t have a green thumb? Not to worry, amaryllis bulbs are easy to grow. Hans Langeveld, bulb specialist at Longfield Gardens, explains how:
1. Fill a container 2/3 full of potting soil.
2. Place the bulb in the container and cover with potting soil up to the shoulders of the bulb, making sure to leave the top of the bulb exposed.
3. Water sparingly as they do not need much water.
4. Place container in filtered sunlight.
Amaryllis bulbs will bloom about 4-8 weeks after planting.
Few bulbs are easier to grow, or bloom with greater color and beauty than amaryllis. Amaryllis in Greek means sparkling, and truly describes the attention a potted amaryllis will catch at holiday gatherings and parties. This year, enjoy beautiful blooms all winter long.
