Addiction Recovery Advocates Recognized for Outstanding Achievement
Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 05, 2016 -- Faces & Voices of Recovery will honor leaders of the addiction recovery movement who have made extraordinary contributions across the nation at the annual America Honors Recovery Awards Dinner and Gala on July 11, 2016 at the National Press Club in Washington, DC. The event showcases individuals and organizations who are advocating for the rights of people seeking recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
The 2016 Voice of Recovery Award will be presented to Michael Botticelli of Washington, DC, Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, for sharing his personal recovery at a very public level while working to change the conversation about addiction in the media and public policy arena.
The 2016 William L. White Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Johnny Allem, of Washington, DC, President/CEO of Aquila Recovery, for his over 30 years of leadership in the recovery advocacy movement.
America Honors Recovery carries on the legacies of three addiction recovery trailblazers who dedicated their lives to removing barriers for individuals and families affected by addiction: Johnson Institute founder, Dr. Vernon E. Johnson, and recovery advocates, Joel Hernandez and Lisa Mojer-Torres.
The 2016 Vernon Johnson Awards will be presented to four individuals for their achievements in promoting awareness of the reality of recovery from addiction to the public, policymakers, media and others within their own communities.
Individual Advocate- Steven G. Polin Esq., of Washington, DC, has has served as General Counsel for the Oxford House, Inc. since 1995. He has been a leading advocate for the protection of individuals with addiction histories under the Federal Fair Housing Act.
Individual Advocate Award (In Memoriam)- The family of Laura Elliott- Engels of Cuba, NY, will receive the award for Laura’s outstanding work throughout her career helping individuals achieve long-term recovery from alcohol and drug addiction.
Family Advocate- Tiffany Hunsley of Rochester, Minnesota, has been a leading parent/family advocate in Southeastern Minnesota where she has been a recovery coach for families in the child welfare system. Ms. Hunsley is the Executive Director of Recovery is Happening, a Recovery Community Organization.
Young Adult Advocate- Sarah Nerad, of Columbus, Ohio, has been a leading advocacy voice for youth and young adults since 2010. Currently, Ms. Nerad is the Director of Recovery at Ohio State University’s Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse., Prevention and Recovery. She is the Program Manager of Ohio State’s Collegiate Recovery Community.
The 2016 Joel Hernandez Award will be presented to the RASE Project in Harrisburg, PA, for its success in carrying out a vision and mission of mobilizing resources within and outside the recovery community to increase the prevalence and quality of long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.
The 2016 Lisa Mojer Torres Award will be presented to Paul L. Samuels of New York, NY, President/CEO of the Legal Action Center, for his tireless efforts to eliminate discrimination towards persons with addiction and criminal justice histories.
