Maurer speculates that the technology bubble crash of 2000 might have pushed investors towards alternative investments and away from mainstream stocks and mutual funds. Maurer feels the more recent burst of the housing bubble has helped the self-directed IRA and alternative investments gain even more popularity among both sophisticated and average investors.
