Adventures in Preservation Announces Day Tour of Venice to Highlight October 2014 Italy Preservation Project
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) July 30, 2013 -- Northern Italy will be the destination for experiential travelers joining Adventures in Preservation (AiP) to combine their travel with hands-on learning. AiP recently announced that a highlight of this project is a day-tour of Venice led by art conservator, Alma Ortolan. Ms. Ortolan will teach and lead preservation work taking place in Vittorio Veneto as well as providing a behind-the-scenes tour of Venice where she was involved with restoration of the Grand Opera House La Fenice.
Travelers with a love of art and history, and a sense of adventure, will meet in Serravalle of Vittorio Veneto to assist with preservation of the Monastery of S. Giovanni Battista. Within the monastery, which dates to 1367, sits the 15th-century cloister that housed the Minor Franciscan Order until 1769. Columns and wall paintings in the courtyard are the focus of the hands-on learning portion of the trip.
The day-tour of Venice led by Alma Ortolan will enhance the art and preservation experience. The tour will feature a visit to La Fenice, which suffered a devastating fire in 1996. Damage was compounded by the lack of historical evidence to document original decoration and painting.
In 2002-03, Ms. Ortolan undertook in-depth investigation and restoration of key portions of the opera house. The original color palette and decorative paint schemes were identified for the entire Royal Box and the Grand Balcony and recreated using traditional painting materials and methods. This experience will be described to project participants.

Two week-long sessions will be held at the Monastery of S. Giovanni Battista from September 28 – October 4 and October 5-11, 2014. AiP’s project is open to any experiential traveler age 18 and up, regardless of level of experience in historic preservation or art conservation.
