Advice Column Answer Sheds Light on the Downside of Plastic Surgery Stigma, notes Dr. J

A January 29 “Dear Abby” advice column appearing in The Southern focuses on a situation where a middle-aged father wrote in out of concern for his 23 year-old daughter, who is considering a rhinoplasty (nose job) procedure but is dealing with resistance both from her husband and her mother. The father has been concealing the fact that, years ago, he himself obtained a similar procedure before meeting his wife. The advice columnist responded vigorously that the father should share the information and support his daughter in her ultimate decision, whichever way she decides. Dr. J heartily agrees with Dear Abby, and adds that the case illustrates the undue stigma that, even today, some plastic surgery patients are subjected to.
Dr. J notes that the advice columnist’s response to the indecisive father, “What [your daughter] chooses to do with the nose on her face should be her decision and no one else's because no one else will be wearing it,” sums up very nicely the best attitude towards procedures obtained by anyone. Yet, he also can’t help but notice the tone of a great many online celebrity gossip sites which routinely discuss “accusations” and “charges” of plastic surgery, as if obtaining a procedure were some kind of a misdeed. While prying into the personal lives of celebrities is nothing new, Dr. J notes that the habit of sitting in judgement on others’ choices about their plastic surgery is not only unkind to the specific individuals, but may discourage women and men who could benefit from procedures. Dr. J adds that prospective patients have many things to consider, and the often highly negative atmosphere engendered by judgmental Internet comments are not doing anything to further an intelligent discussion of the uses of plastic surgery.
The good news, adds Dr. J, is that there have never been more beneficial options for a plastic surgery procedure and surgeries have never been safer. Rhinoplasty in particular remains one of the most popular procedures. Indeed, while it is extremely popular with female patients, Dr. J notes that rhinoplasty is actually the most typical procedure among male patients, such as the father who wrote into Dear Abby.
