After 131 Years in Milwaukee, Netzow's Pianos, Wisconsin's Oldest Piano Dealer, is Going out of Business
Wauwatosa, WI (PRWEB) November 15, 2016 -- When people in Wisconsin think of pianos, they think of Netzow’s.
Now, after 131 years in business, the sound of piano keys being played at Netzow's Pianos will go silent as its current owner, Steve Datz, retires and closes the doors of this iconic piano company forever.
Starting in 1885, the storied history of Netzow's is one that parallels the ebb and flow of Milwaukee itself. During the first year, Charles Netzow moved to 507 11th street to begin selling sewing machines from a wagon, according to family stories. He expanded the business to include pianos in the years following. In 1896 Netzow created a wholesale business of manufacturing pianos and published a catalog offering eight models of Fernwood, Netzow and Mehlin upright pianos and a single Mehlin grand. After a few years, the manufacturing side of the business closed, and the retail operations reopened as Netzow Brothers with Elmer, one of the Netzow sons, taking the lead. In 1956, the downtown Milwaukee store relocated to 2125 North Ave at Fond du Lac. Netzow’s left this location in 1981 and moved their store to its current location at 88th and North Ave.
In 1988 Netzow’s Pianos was sold to an employee group headed by Steve Datz, who is the remaining owner today. For many years, the store has been home to the iconic Yamaha piano brand known around the world. Thousands of families, schools, churches and musicians have purchased their pianos at Netzow’s over the years.
When discussing the closing, Steve Datz stated, "It’s a bittersweet time for our family and employees and we’re grateful to have made so many friends over the years. We want this closing to be special so we've made the business decision to offer extremely discounted prices on all our in-stock pianos. It's our way of closing the doors in a positive way and to say thank you to this tremendous community."
Netzow’s is holding a private liquidation of all in-stock pianos on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, November 17-19, in their showroom at 8853 W. North Avenue, Wauwatosa, WI 53226. Appointments to the private sale can be made by calling 262.422.3031. The liquidation will be open to the public on Sunday, November 20, from noon until 5pm.
