After Brooklyn Bridge Stunt, French Tourist Returns Home - Thanks Brooklyn Criminal Lawyer James Medows
Brooklyn, New York (PRWEB) February 26, 2015 -- French tourist Yonathan Souid is on his way home after completing a 240-hour sentence cleaning “The Tombs” in lower Manhattan. Judge Michael Gerstein handed down the sentence in December according to court documents, (1) after Souid scaled the Brooklyn Bridge to take pictures of the famous skyline before returning home.
“The sentence required Yonathan to complete community service by performing 240 hours of custodial work at the Manhattan Detention Center,” said Souid’s attorney, James Medows.
“A Russian tourist who did something similar received 90 hours of community service. (2) Yonathan’s sentence was excessive in my opinion, but he just wanted to get back to his family, to school and to his life,” Medows said. “This was the fastest way for him to do that.”
Souid, who was visiting Brooklyn for a Jewish convention in November, climbed a third of the way up one of the cables on the north side of the bridge. He came down without incident when police arrived.
“I didn’t want to hurt anyone,” said Souid. “I just have passion for photography.”
The incident came shortly after a pair of German artists claimed responsibility for scrambling to the top of the bridge, replacing the American flags with plain, white ones (3), and after the 24-year-old Russian tourist climbed it because he said it was “fun.”
“The Brooklyn Bridge must not to be trespassed upon, no matter who does it or for any reason,” said Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson.
“In this age of terrorism, it’s very important that we protect the security of the bridge at all times and under all circumstances,” Thompson added. (4)
The city installed steel panels on the bridge’s supports to deter future climbers, and according to the Associated Press, the New York Police Department and the Department of Transportation were planning to install cameras and sensors on the towers. (5)
“He [Souid] did something that, as New Yorkers, we know is a foolish thing to do," said James Medows, “but he didn't have the intent to scare society.”
