Airing Preps Indiegogo Launch to Fund Development of Revolutionary Device for Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Boston, MA (PRWEB) June 12, 2015 -- Airing LLC, a company which has developed a revolutionary device for the treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), today announced that it will be conducting a “crowdfunding” launch on Indiegogo beginning on June 15. The funds raised as a result of this effort will enable the company to develop a breakthrough Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) device that weighs less than an ounce, fits right into an OSA patient’s nose, and has no cords or hoses.
The most common treatment of sleep apnea is provided by a CPAP device which consists of a mask with hoses, cords, and straps around the head. For many, this makes sleeping so uncomfortable that a large percentage of the estimated 18 million Americans diagnosed with sleep apnea do not “comply,” meaning they choose not to use the prescribed treatment. Airing’s breakthrough CPAP solution is designed to fit into a patient’s nose without any of the cumbersome hoses, cords, or masks, which will make treatment much more comfortable and likely to occur.
Crowdfunding is defined as “the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.” Instead of traditional investors, crowdfunding campaigns are funded by the general public. This allows companies such as Airing to raise money to fund the development of an idea directly from those who want to make it a reality. Since 2008, individuals and companies from around the world have turned to Indiegogo as a means for bringing dreams and ideas to life.
Airing chose Indiegogo over other financing options because it represents the best way to align the needs of the company with the interests of those who will be the direct beneficiaries: the sufferers of sleep apnea.
Airing was founded by Stephen Marsh, an established entrepreneur and innovator who is the named inventor on more than 75 patents and applications in the areas of electronics, energy, health care and consumer products. While he was conducting research in another field, a personal connection with the problems of sleep apnea led Marsh to the idea that micro fluidic pump technology could be applied to this sector. He then shared his concept and design with medical experts in the field of breathing disorders, all of whom endorsed his approach. Marsh designed an innovative micro-blower system that could take advantage of the great efficiencies of the high speed roll to roll manufacturing process. This enables the production of a low-cost, single-use micro-CPAP device that people will be more likely to use.
Effective, Low-Cost & Disposable
This innovative solution is the result of Marsh’s extensive research in the area of micro fluidic pumps in the Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) space which identified a host of inefficiencies and limitations with current solutions, and led to Marsh’s design for a better micro fluidic pump, a design that works just as well moving air. The “micro-blowers” solution in Airing takes advantage of the efficiencies of the well-proven “Roll to Roll” (R2R) manufacturing process, which allows for inexpensive mass manufacturing of the solution, and which will allow Airing devices to be low-cost and single-use.
The result of this innovation will be healthier lifestyle, better compliance with CPAP therapy, and a better night’s sleep -- for those afflicted, and for loved ones who are impacted by snoring, and wakeful nights.
“We believe that we have created a solution to address the millions of people worldwide who are affected by sleep apnea, but in order to bring this breakthrough solution to market, we need to raise capital to fund the development, testing and approval of our initial prototypes,” said Stephen Marsh. “What we like most about conducting this fundraise via crowdfunding is that it enables those who are most passionate about the idea to directly contribute and bring it to reality. We hope that anyone who is affected – or has a loved one affected – by sleep apnea will consider contributing, as we believe this solution has the potential to help millions of people live healthier, happier lives.”
Funding Airing
To build a proof-of-concept prototype, Airing is conducting a crowdfunding effort on Indiegogo that begins at 9:00 a.m. on June, 15, 2015.
