AIS Analysis Finds That Aetna/Humana Merger Could Cause Major MA Market-Share Shift

Washington, DC (PRWEB) August 18, 2016 -- Some Medicare Advantage (MA) markets could undergo a massive market-share shift due to the proposed merger of two major health insurance companies, researchers at Atlantic Information Services, Inc. (AIS) have found. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has flagged counties in 21 states in which Aetna, Inc. and/or Humana Inc. must divest some of their Medicare operations in order for the merger to proceed, AIS reports. Molina Healthcare agreed to acquire some 290,000 of those Medicare Advantage lives.

Analysis published on AIS’s Directory of Health Plans—Online Version (DHP) examines selected counties in each state that would be most affected by this transition. Combined, Aetna and Humana serve more than 400,000 MA lives in these counties alone, so the divestiture could impact more than half of those members.

AIS has determined that, currently, combined Aetna/Humana market share in selected counties highlighted by the DOJ ranges from roughly 35% to almost 96% in one county in Utah, and 63% market share – 100,715 lives – in Florida’s heavily populated Broward County. Overall, in the sample of counties from DOJ’s list that AIS examined, Aetna and Humana represent an average 62% market share.
